The
Story of Walt
So,
just how did we come to acquire this head, you ask? It's a long,
long story.
It
started many many years ago, when Jennifer and I were five years
old and became best friends. But you don't need to know every detail
of our boring and pathetic lives.... It didn't get exciting until
that day we were at an auction, hoping to pick up some stuff to
sell on eBay. (Or just keep for ourselves.) At any rate, I don't
know if you've been to very many auctions, but they often sell things
in "box lots" -- usually a pile of junk (in a box - duh!)
for one money. Sometimes it's a mystery as to just what is in the
box, and they often sell dirt cheap.
Well, in one box was an old
vintage looking Coleman cooler, and since Jen and I were going on
a cross country road trip, we thought, "Hey, that could come
in handy!" (Have you ever traveled with one of those Styrofoam
coolers? They squeak and squawk! They're a total nightmare!) So,
we jokingly bid on the lot, and were promptly outbid by another
bidder.
We continued chit chatting
amongst each other, gossiping about people we know, gesturing wildly
and giving each other high-fives. Little did we know that each of
our movements was being taken as a bid... until we realized that
we were the winning bidders, and that the box lot sold for $100!
Well, we were very annoyed, but there was nothing we could do. We
were stuck shelling out one hundred beans for a box of junk.
We loaded the goods up in the
back of my Tracker, and took it home. We opened the cooler, and,
lo and behold, there was a head in it!!! Man, were we surprised!
We didn't know what the heck it was, and figured it was a head from
some kind of wax museum. We did recognize it as Walt Sidney, that
famous studio executive, made even more famous by being one of the
first people to have been cryogenically frozen.
Being wacky gals, we decided
to take the head on vacation with us, and take picture post cards
to send to our family and friends, using the head as a prop. We
kept it in the cooler so the wax wouldn't melt. But one night, we
got lots and lots of beer, and didn't have room in the cooler for
the head, so we left it out....
When we awoke the next morning...
You're not going to believe this!!! The head was ALIVE!!! It wasn't
a wax sculpture, it was the actual head of Walt Sidney! Somehow,
through the cryogenic freezing process, his head became enabled
to live independently of it's body. Walt was so happy to finally
have been thawed after all those years... and was even happier to
be traveling with two beautiful young women.
